5. Hearing Topics (5 of 7)

Depth and breadth of discussion are also key hearing quality constructs. A list of hearing topics are provided in the instrument. These include topics that should be discussed at all hearing types (see the top of the list below) and topics that may be hearing specific (see the bottom of the list below). Before observing a hearing, it’s important to have reviewed and made yourself familiar with the topic list in the hearing observation instrument. This will help you more easily find the topics to code their presence or absence when you are observing a hearing. To code discussion, you are making two judgments 1) did the discussion take place and 2) what was the level or “depth” of the discussion.
